In recent past, there have been an alarming number of “jewelers” and jewelry sales associates who have unfortunately swapped out a customer’s diamonds for cubic zirconia’s (CZ), a stone, which to the untrained eye, looks identical to a diamond. Bellevue Rare Coins wants to help our customers and readers avoid such a scandal by offering a couple of tips when taking your valuables in for service.
Take Your Valuables To A Reputable Jeweler Or Dealer
In most cases, jewelers and their associates do not want your stones because the risk of getting caught and losing business does not out weight the short term gain. With that being said, it’s important to take your jewelry and stones to a business that is well-known for their ethical business practices. Word of mouth and internet reviews from previous and existing customers are typically spot on. The Better Business Bureau tends to be an excellent source for these types of honest reviews.
Know Your Stone
When taking your stones in for repair, request that the person(s) who will be cleaning or handling your diamond plot your stone before leaving the store. Ask that they include the plot on the receipt or attach requested item to receipt. This allows for you, the customer, to know all the aspects of your diamond such as inclusions and their placement on the stone. Having this “map” of your diamond will decrease the likelihood of an accidental or intentional swap.
If a jeweler of associate refuses to plot your diamond, it’s time to take your business elsewhere. A business with honest intent will do what is necessary to secure not only their business but also affirm faith in their customer by providing peace of mind.
