Each year, one team in the NFL is the honored recipient of the most prestigious trophy in football, the Vince Lombardi Trophy. In between chicken wings, anticipated commercials, and celebratory beers, spectators will anxiously watch as one team defeats the other and is awarded to highest honor in American football. What some fans may not know is what the trophy is called, why it is named as such and just how large that seemingly “small” trophy actually is.
IT’S NAMED AFTER THE FIRST COACH TO LEAD A TEAM TO SUPER BOWL VICTORY
Vince Lombardi was the first coach to win a super bowl game with his team, the Green Bay Packers. Upon his death in 1970, the NFL changed the name to honor the legendary coach and memorialize his efforts and contributions to the sport.
YOU WON’T BE HAVING BREAKFAST WITH IT ANY TIME SOON
Back in 1966, then NFL commission, Pete Rozelle had one very important lunch with the VP of Tiffany & Co., Oscar Riedner. As does anything that become life altering, it began as a sketch on a napkin and soon became American footballs most sought after symbol of triumph, the trophy.
IT’S MUCH LARGER THAN IT APPEARS ON THE SMALL SCREEN
Standing 22 inches tall and weighing in at 7 pounds, the Vince Lombardi Trophy is crafted entirely of sterling silver. The design features a standard size, fully inflated mind you, NFL approved football resting in the kicking position on a three-sided stand.
THE GREEN BAY PACKERS ARE THE ONLY TEAM TO HAVE ALL THREE VERSIONS OF THE TROPHY
The trophy has undergone minimal changes throughout the years resulting in 3 minor alterations. The first version featured the NFL and AFL logos were featured on the front of the trophy. After Super Bowl V the old NFL shield replaced the aforementioned until Super Bowl XLIII when it was replaced with the modern NFl shield football fans know today. Having won the first two consecutive Super Bowls, as well as Super Bowl XXXI and XLV, the Packers are the only team to have won all three versions of the Lombardi trophy.
