Consisting of Colonials, half cents, large cents and Hard Times Tokens, these coins were used for the daily transactions of the early American citizens. Large cents and half cents were the first coins ever struck by the First United States Mint in Philadelphia, PA, under the authority of the United States government. Having the lowest face value of any coin struck by the United States, Half cents are rare and were minted intermittently between 1793 and 1857, along with the large cents. In 1857, half cents were discontinued forever, while the large cents were replaced by the more manageable small cents.
