To help ring in the New Year, the Royal Canadian Mint has released a charming, witty and one of a kind collectible: a clever and alluring monkey coin in honor of 2016 marking the Year of the Monkey as per the Chinese Zodiac. The limited and exclusive coin reflects the same unique characteristics the zodiac uses to describe those born under a year ruled by the mischievous primate.
With a face value of $2500 CAD, the one kilogram, solid gold coin has a true value of $69,000 CAD and is currently being considered as a highly sought after collectible. Available in limited release strictly within Canada and the United States, the first of its kind coin is struck with a scallop die, a first for what is hoped to be many, along with a mirrored background on both the obverse and reverse.
On the obverse you will find the mischievous character balancing itself high above in  an arbor setting. Within the curve of the primates’ tail rests an undeniably eye-catching red enamel square with the Chinese character for “Monkey”. The reverse depicts the bust of Queen Elizabeth II, donning her trademark pearl necklace, as designed by portrait artist, Susanna Blunt.
The coin is housed in a beautiful, traditional Chinese print, gold satin box, accompanied by a certificate and individual serial number.
With only 10 coins struck by the mint, and the composite of 99.99% gold, it is easy to understand why this coin will go quickly for serious collectors. Three Degrees Creative Group did a remarkable job when creating this unique shape and design for 2016.
